End Notes
A Day in the Life of a Pediatrician
By Sarah Brandt, M.D.
Baby turtles frolic in the lobby fish tank,
Starfish carpet cushions my steps,
Dolphins adorn bathroom walls,
Crayon drawings and finger paintings hang next to diplomas,
Cries and coos,
A new baby’s smell.
A tiny fist tugs at my hair,
A hand explores my pockets: a search for stickers,
Four-year-old feet dance,
Adolescents slouch.
Bottles and burp rags,
Strollers and diaper bags,
Runaway Cheerios and Goldfish crackers,
Backpacks, iPods, and cell phones.
Ear infections, injuries, and eating disorders,
Acne and anger,
Parental fear, fatigue, and frustration.
New life,
Growing up and away,
Worry and laughter,
Grief and joy,
This is my day.
